Mechanical ventilation

The term ventilation system is usually associated with large, high-occupancy spaces such as offices, shops, or gyms, where specific regulations require adequate air quality. In homes, however, ventilation has traditionally been natural, relying on simply opening the windows to refresh the indoor air.

Since 2006, Spain's Technical Building Code (Código Técnico de la Edificación, CTE) has set specific rules to ensure air quality in homes. Its Basic Health Requirements Document (Documento Básico de Salubridad) defines the technical requirements and the design and sizing criteria for residential ventilation systems. On this difficult plot, bounded by the road up to El Regato and constrained by the nearby Castaños river, a building of 5 floors above grade and a single basement was erected, with capacity for 30 large homes, 30 storage rooms, 32 parking spaces, and 4 commercial units.

The homes are large, most with 4 bedrooms, a usable floor area of about 125 m², and terraces of approximately 30 m².

This renovation aimed for a functional layout, with a clean, contemporary design against which a few singular elements stand out.

The exposed brick wall in the living room and the main bedroom carries the character of a wall more than a century old, showing the passage of time and the interventions it has undergone over the years.

The wooden pillars are fully stripped and reinforced with untreated steel profiles with visible welds, adding a certain industrial character that meets the clean lines and light colors defining the rooms of the home.

Full renovation of a 600 m² space for administrative use by Lanbide, the Basque Employment Service.

The intervention focused on creating a functional, accessible, and comfortable environment, optimizing the layout to accommodate public service areas, internal work areas, and meeting rooms.

Priority was given to durable, sustainable materials and to solutions that promote energy efficiency along with acoustic and lighting comfort. The result is a contemporary space that meets the service's operational needs, fostering transparency, collaboration, and environmental quality in the workplace.

This restaurant, located between Doña Casilda park and the city's new commercial and financial district, draws its theme from the four elements of nature: water, wind, earth, and fire. Its eclectic interior design, free of all formalism, carries oriental influences and echoes of nature in all its forms.

The interior design, as mentioned, is inspired by the elements of nature. Earth appears in the ceramic wall cladding in ochre and gray tones, in the stone floor, and in the backlit alabaster behind the bar. Fire emerges from the ambient lighting on the pillars and walls, from nest-like designer sconces and cloud-like pendant lamps, joined by a continuous projection of flames on one of the walls that makes you feel inside a volcano. Wind flows across the ceilings, where textile sheets hang and ripple along their path like the belly of a whale. Water falls from the ceiling as a minimal curtain separating areas of the dining room.

Full restoration and extension of this old Palace, built between 1902 and 1905 for a wealthy Biscayan family.

The hotel's architectural ensemble comprises three major pieces. First, a landscaped setting that connects it to the urban surroundings of Santurtzi. Second, a new semi-buried volume, known as the Plinth, which houses a large share of the hotel's rooms and a multipurpose hall of about 500 m². And finally, of course, the Palace itself, home to the finest rooms and the main entrance and circulation areas. The built area of the whole complex is approximately 10,000 m².

The project turns a former auto repair shop in the city center into a gym, with 280 m² on the ground floor and an additional 80 m² on the mezzanine.

The ground floor is an open space where the different types of training take place. It also includes a changing room and an accessible restroom that complies with accessibility regulations.

The mezzanine houses the remaining changing rooms and technical rooms, as well as a small private area for the owners.
